Max Vieri would be worth approaching. He was born in Sydney and his family still have interests here. He's never going to be a Serie A player but could be a useful striker.

What ever happens, I reckon Sydney will have a good team. The pull here is very strong; Best city , big population means potentially massive crowds, and ultimitely a Massive Club.

I was thinking someone of the calibre of durante and Ante Duric at the backs. The mids there aint no way Elrich will come to Australia, I read an article in the paper that he wont be as there is interest from English clubs.
As for marquee players I dont believe it should be goal keepers recruited from other countries as Australia has one of the biggest pool of talented goalkeepers in the world. Just look overseas, alot of the big clubs have aussie goalkeepers somewhere in there ranks. We have recently been losing our goalkeepers to other countries which shows just how good they are.
Archie Thompson I wouldnt mind seeing return to Australia, maybe consider him for the role of marquee player, he has represented Australia, holds the world record for number of goals scored in a game, and people know who he is. As for young players I would love to see the likes of Cansdell-Sheriff or Brett Holman playing in Sydney FC colours (whatever they maybe)
Has anybody heard anymore of the rumor about Teddy Sheringham wishing to finish his career in Australia. I heard this a while ago and apparently he was thinking into the likes of Adelaide. Just think if we could contract him, he would be a great marquee player, has played for Man United and everybody knows who they are.

They aren't exactly a small team. He would be a great signing though, getting on the older side but he would be great for the club, can still score goals and would help the younger players in the team as well.

I was reading the other day that Denis Bergkamp could be a possibility for the new A-League. But then i remembered his fear of flying!!! Any chance of chartering a ship with the Lowy family $$$$'s?

Any chance of chartering a ship with the Lowy family $$$$'s? good luck. bergkamp is still playing top flight football in the best team in the EPL, i dont htink he will be leaving europe to play in australia. would be a execellent scoup if it happens, but the chances are slim to none. Zola? Peitt? Baggio? if we are looking to get a well known player, then we may have to look at ppl a little older like the names above. OR if we want someone younger, who have more to offer on the playing field, then maybe someone who doesnt have such a name for themselves, but will actaully try.. i am of the view that it may be better to create your own stars. scouting south america, asia or africa... i am sure we could pick up a few players cheap, and make them our star player. what australia football lacks is flair, and players from these regions have it coming out of their ears. flair = marketable.

ZOOOOLLLLLAAAAAA!!! errrr... sorry... but that would be too good to be true if he came here yeah. He is playing down his career with his original club in sardinia and I didn't think that he would make a move like the you you propose.. but would certainly be awesome if he did huh.

IMO people are dreaming about this big name marquee player. The more I think about the less apealing it sounds. I mean seriously who are we going to get. The like of Bergkamp, baggio etc will earn much more playing in those gulf states where they are getting paid absolutely ridiculous amounts of money.

Durante has signed with Newcastle along with Liam Reddy, Nick Carle, Craig Deans, and as mentioned before, Ante Milicic.

Personally I think Mark Bosnich would be a great Marquee player (assuming he can get his fitness levels back up to that required from any professional athlete). He is a man virtually EVERY Australian-let alone every Australian football fan-has heard of. Bosnich at Sydney FC would be the fallen angel somehow born-again for the new A-League. He would prick people's curiosity-they'd turn up for the games simply to answer that niggling question in their heads; has he still got it?
And I think anyone who's seen this man's highlights reel knows he had it. When I say he was one of the best keepers in the world i'm not just being patriotic. Bosnich was incredible. If he can regain anything close to 'it' playing for an A-League team, it's hard to imagine any other keeper in the league matching him for pure class.
As for the notion that the 'general public' don't want a Goalkeeper as a marquee, i say bollocks to that-look at what Oliver Kahn did for Germany at WC2002. A challenge: ask any non-football following Aussie what they remember from that tournament. I bet most of them simply say 'Kahn'. Or 'that ape man'. Moreover, at the age of 32 he still has plenty of time left, considering many Goalkeepers nowadays play till the brink of 40.
However, on the other hand I would also be happy if Sydney FC rejected the idea of a marquee (although given Sydney's sporting market It seems unlikely) in favour of importing players from South America or Asia. It gives the team some cosmopolitain flavour and flair that you simply can't get from an all-aussie side. Definately good for promoting the idea of 'the world game' as well.
As far as home based players go, obviously anything could happen between now and August, particuarly with the prospect of European based players coming home, but it's definately a dissapointment to see Milicic and Carle off the market so early. Best secure Colosimo-a very classy, reasonably well known player-before it's too late.

He is a man virtually EVERY Australian-let alone every Australian football fan-has heard of. For the wrong reasons now. More ppl will know of his drug past then his short term at Man Yoo. Image is important and I think it's silly to be spending alot of money on a player who the media will hown because of his past.

What about the idea of using the marquee player to keep a young talent in Australia for even longer? I.e, not just keeping a 16 year-old here until they're 18-19, which would happen within the salary cap, but keeping an 18 year-old here until he's 22-23? That way we have one young player who we not only get to see nurtured in their early days as a professional but then also flourish in their early twenties before we simply can't hold on to them any longer?

Andre Gumprecht is returning to Perth, where he belongs. Sorry Gumprecht has signed with the Mariners along with Beauchamp. Syndey is really lagging at the moment
