Rumour has it that Ned Zelic is set to become the face of Sydney FC.
I also recall reading that the Sydney Blues had been targeting Ante Milicic, Ahmed Elrich and Nicky Carle to name a few.
Do you think that Sydney FC will be looking to sign any of the above or has anyone else heard other player rumours?

So what if he is 33!!! He'd be a marketable team member and he is Australian which is important too in my opinion, who would you rather see?

yes i agree ned is a top bloke but i would target somebody that is aound 25-26 who will be around for atleast 5-7 years, quote] Who around that age has the profile and ability to succeed as a player and a marketing tool for the club?? For the record I've never thought of Ned Zelic as anything other than Australian!!!

zelic shouldnt be considered a "marquee" player tho. sure, it would be GREAT to have him in the team as he is a high profile player in the same vein robbie slater was to the spirit, but he isnt a huge crowd puller.
i would really like to see sydney fc explore a little and scout some potential players from south america or asia (dont we want to build them links with asia??)... again, these are our marquee players, BUT they are overseas talent who maybe not have a name for themselves, but if they get the right person, can be very marketable as they arent australian.... kinda of what the NBL does with there "imports". they arent huge name players, but they are outsiders, and the fans do want to see if they are something special.
nicke carle, milicic, elrich, colosimo, zelic, corica, okon, culina etc etc...
these are the players the APL need to have, but not as marquee players. and i guess this is where the salary cap may hurt the APL.

i would really like to see sydney fc explore a little and scout some potential players from south america or asia (dont we want to build them links with asia during 02/03 NSL season i think, hiroyuki ishida really created a bit of a sensation at the olympic sharks games, there was a bit of expectation each time he touched the ball. I'm not suggesting that he would necessarily be the man for the job but he was a bit of a flair player and created interest in what otherwise was a relatively dull competition. You could be right on scouting some of the asian talent!! European clubs are doing this regularly and generating a lot of TV and merchandising money out of it!! I think players of that ilk are definately required. I think the likes of Nick Carle generate that same expectation also and in my opinion people like to see younger aussies doing well a la Carle/Elrich.

I'd be happy with Ned as the marquee player.. I saw someone mention a 400k salary for these marquee players... We can't really expect any really great players to return for that kind of money..
Where is Ned right now anyway? Japan or something? While he was in Germany, I reckon even as a bench warmer he would've been earning a fair bit more than 400k a year.
The names you's have mentioned would be an excellent basis for a team if you ask me.. Milicic, Zelic, Colosimo will probably last a limited time but they are quality players.... while Elrich & Carle have already shown they have skill, and we can always hope that in a few years they will become players of the callibre of Kewell or Viduka..
I think the APL has to become a lot more professional than the NSL was in order to attract quality players... i know that some of the state league/previous nsl clubs are extremely disorganised and don't treat they're players with professional courtesy.. Hopefully this will change dramatically in the APL

Last night on 2UE sports today, tom d.ickmonos said the way forward in regards to marquee players is guest apperences.. i wanted to punch my radio in anger. guest apperances are a quick fix solution. its a joke that they even consider them.
maybe if we are lucky we can get a FAT nicola berti out here again. wont that be just grand.
why waste the money the teams have on guest apperences?
anyone else agree guest apperences arent worth the light of day???

I think Ned is in the second tier in Austria Yep therefore he would be ideal as one of the higher wage earners of the standard squad players (100,000 or there abouts) but not a marquee player in my oppinion.

If zelic is your marquee player then you have massive problems, he hasnt played in australia or for australia for 10 years

Short list of a few players i would like/expect to see in Sydney FC colours. -Zelic or Okon (one of the two will most likely be our captain IMO) -Elrich -Milicic -Jason Cullina -Nick Carle -Clint Bolton Obviously there are heaps more maybies, but i think it is very likely those 6 will be in our squad.

Nick Carle would be a great buy. I've always rated the guy, he is great behind two strikers.
