Back on topic though, Football fever had the newcastle chairman on the radio on sunday night and they confirmed what I said earlier that they named the team the Jets due to the Newcastle community seeing the RAAF base at Williamtown as a landmark of their city.

I have Italian parents who stick alot to their cultural ways.
However, I am Australian through and through.
AC Milan is my favourite team but when they came to Australia to play the Socceroos I wore my Australian and cheered for the Aussies.
I can never understand Australian born wogs supporting other countries against Australia.
To me it is a slap in the face to the country that supports you, provides you employment and education, and gives the opportunity to lead a good life. This is the reasons my parents came to this country because they didn't have that opportunity in Italy.
I'm still proud of my culture and heritage but I am Australian first.

I think there is a line that gets crossed into stupidity with some names. 'Glory' and 'Victory' certainly cross it, 'Mariners' I think could be worse. 'Jets' is alright as long as they keep it subtle, i.e, don't blast it all over the new shield/logo, keep it unofficial. Sort of like the, hmm, what are they called? Magpies?

I think you'd have to say Newcastle have the best team atm. I wonder if any of their superstar signings have a "No Venables" get-out clause in their contract LOL No Venables for A-League By Matthew Hall Sydney November 28, 2004 Page Tools Email to a friend Printer format Former England and Australia coach Terry Venables will not be taking up a role with Newcastle United Jets in next year's A-League. The NSW club had consistently claimed the soccer legend would be involved with the team, but Venables' London-based agent Leon Angel yesterday ruled out any position. "Things can always change in life, but as we are today it is 100 per cent not happening," Angel said. "We want to make it categorically clear that he is not coming." Angel confirmed that Venables had been talking with Remo Nogarotto, the Jets' director of football operations, but had never confirmed he would take up a role at Newcastle. "Terry did have talks with Newcastle United a while ago, but at no time had he agreed to a deal," Angel said. "I don't understand why people are saying that he had." Angel said that although Venables was not involved with coaching at present, he had several ongoing property development ventures in Britain and Europe, as well as regular media commitments in Britain, that ruled out a move to Australia. Advertisement Advertisement"Terry has been, and still is, quite keen on Australia, but he's not able to come because he has a number of other commitments," Angel said. "The timetable for the league has kept changing as well. First of all it was December and now it seems nothing will be happening until next June. "(Newcastle United owner) Con Constantine can ring me if he wants, but we have made Terry's position quite clear." The Jets owner yesterday refused to publicly admit defeat in his ambitious bid to lure Venables to Newcastle. Constantine said he expected Venables to be in the country before the end of the year. "Every day you hear another story," Constantine said. "It's all happening. I'm relaxed. Everyone should relax." The Venables no-show is the second time in 10 days that a high-profile European coach has snubbed the A-League. Former Inter Milan coach Roy Hodgson turned down an approach from Sydney FC after the Australian club's interest became public. Former Perth Glory and Iraq national team coach Bernd Stange, a German, and one-time Chelsea boss Gianluca Vialli, an Italian, are the latest international names linked with Sydney's top job. Stange, whose most recent appointment was a placement in war-torn Iraq, has said he wants to be part of Australian soccer's future, but said he had "heard nothing from Sydney". Now working in a development role with the German soccer federation, Stange charmed the WA public during his time as Perth Glory coach from 1999 to 2001. He had been contacted by Melbourne United before it was overlooked in favour of rival Melbourne Victory, and said this week he was available to coach in the A-League next season. "I would be interested, definitely," he said from his home town of Jena, in Germany. "My family was very happy there. I know Australian soccer. I think I have the experience to push a new club." - with Jonathan Cook

I wonder if any of their superstar signings have a "No Venables" get-out clause in their contract LOL I won't be surprised if they do and I won't be surprised if those who have signed do jump ship to another team.

Personally I dont think he'll come, but then again I dont care if he does, theres plenty of other good Australian and Overseas based coach's. Would the players jump ship? I doubt it, they've signed contracts and the coach isnt the be all and end all of everything. Alot of the players newcastle have signed have said they, like the ambition of the club to winning championships and the current squad of great players.

The money being offered probably had something to do with it too.

A British 'ethnic' tag in my view is in theory no better than calling them Newcastle Makedonia. And what's wrong with calling them that? ;D
