Why not the Newcastle Hunters FC? Anyone like that? JF Yes. Logical and appropriate. On the other hand, what other clubs choose to call themselves is not really our business.

Newcastle have added 'Jets' to their name and are to be known as Newcastle United Jets. This news makes me sad. That leaves only two teams without stupid names: Sydney FC & Adelaide United. Maybe we should be contacting Sydney FC to let them know we really don't want to be called the Hotdogs or the Conquistadors or the Rotary Engines or the Rainbows or the Funnelwebs or the Snorkels or the Ultima Primes or the Special Air Services or the Four Wheel Drives or the Tomcats or the Quarter Pounders or whatever crap the ponytail brigade have come up with this week. Although "Sydney FC Overlords" has a nice sound about it, but no, just, no.

The local basketball team that plays in the NSW League is called the Newcastle Hunters - so that rules that name out.
I'm pretty sure most of the English clubs have both mascots and nick names. But the nicknames just aren't part of the official title of the club.
The mascots have a race every year in England, so I'm certain they all have mascots.
I'm not happy about adding Jets to our name. I hope our official name is still Newcastle United Football Club and we just have a nickname of the Jets.

It should've been "Newcastle United" or "Newcastle Jets", not "Newcastle United Jets". It sounds very wanky if you ask me, although not as bad as Melbourne Victory! ;D

Quote: Why not sell cups of bovril and issues of the Newcastle Cronicle out the front of the stadium! Like how more British to you want our league to be! A British 'ethnic' tag in my view is in theory no better than calling them Newcastle Makedonia. What are they uniting; NOTHING! We need a clean slate with this league. No baggage, no ethnic ties or associations to piss anyone off. Even if Jets is very very lame. Why not the Newcastle Hunters FC? Anyone like that? END QUOTE re im greek and ill tell u this every single greek i know in melbourne has said fuk this anglo saxon marketing shit and have gone and are now watching south melbourne in the VPL...........Do u honestly believe that there are enough passionate aussies to go and watch the soccer??? Sorry time and time again u have proved us wrong..........to say something like no ethnic ties etc is stupid because noone will support the teams except for the british as there will be no greeks or corats etc in the starting line ups..........and look honestly i want the A league to succeed i want to watch good soccer prime time and see big crowds following them............but u cant honestly think that u are going to get greeks, italians, croatians, macedonians and british people to support the same team? ??

Is this like your statement that ALL your friends and family are not going to go to see SFC but you then post another thread saying you will be bringing 20 of your Greek mates to see SFC.

Why not Athletic or City or FC or something a little less tacky. Because putting a daggy Pommy name onto the name of an Aussie club does not make it any more marketable in the long run. I still don't like the club being called "United". What are they uniting? (Yeah, rugby league and 'soccer' so the Knights can get the funding to do up their shithole of a ground.) Why not "FC Hunter Newcastle"? JF

I think they should either have Newcastle United or Newcastle Jets. I think it should also depend on the rest of the league. If all the other clubs are not calling themselves mascot style names then being the only one to do so may seem odd.

Ummm last time i looked arent we supposed to be all australian.. Not "british, european, african, kiwi, american" Is it any wonder most australians look at football at the senior level and laugh.. It seems it will always be split.

I hate this 'it's us against them' mentality. Are we forgetting the fact we are ALL Australian just with different cultures and backgrounds?? You're not Greek, you're not Croatian or whatever ... you're Australian.
PS - I can't wait to see what crappy nickname Sydney FC will have !!

And im not saying you should forget your heritage. But your loyalties (especially if you are born here) should be to the green and gold of Oz. The question I wouldnt mind asking is what do people class them selves as on here? Australian? Greek? English?
