Steve Corica Coming Home
Socceroo midfielder Steve Corica is coming home to continue his glittering career in the A-League with Sydney FC.
The 31 year old is the first of the high-profile Australian expatriates in Europe to be lured back by the new national competition.
Corica has spent a decade in professional football in England and Japan, and has played for his country at every level, including 40 games and six goals for the Socceroos.
Before leaving for overseas, Corica was the pin-up boy of the National Soccer League, winning a championship medal and the under 21 player of the year award in 1992-93 with Marconi Stallions.
“My decision to leave English professional football and return home has been made so much easier for me by the start of the A-League and the ambitious plans of Sydney FC,” said Corica.
“I can feel the excitement about the new league, and it’s come at just the right time for me and my family. I’ve had a wonderful time overseas, but now I can return and still play at my best for Sydney FC.”
Corica has the rare honor of playing at two World Cups (the 1989 under 17 World Cup in Scotland & the 1991 under 20 World Cup in Portugal) and two Olympic Games (1992 Barcelona & 1996 Atlanta).
He left Australia in 1995 to join Leicester City in England, spent five seasons at Wolves from ’96 to 2000, had two seasons in Japan with Sanfreece Hiroshima before joining Walsall two years ago.
“Steve is exactly the type of exciting, skilful player we need to make the A-League and Sydney FC successful,” said Sydney FC chairman, Mr Walter Bugno.
“He was a real crowd favorite in his younger days in the NSL and I’m sure he’ll be just as popular with Sydney FC.”
Newly-appointed Sydney FC assistant coach Ian Crook crossed paths with Corica in the old English First Division, when Crook’s Norwich City defeated Corica’s Wolves 2-0 in a league match.
“Steve’s signing is a massive boost, not just because of his pedigree,” said Crook. “He’s such a versatile player, either in central midfield, out wide or pushed up as an attacking player supporting the strikers.
“When you look at his experience, Steve’s going to bring so many benefits to Sydney FC.”

Well he's got the talent.. And if we sign lots of young players he will be able to keep their heads on straight.

At least players (albeit 1 so far) are coming back to the Oz domestic league, something the NSL was rather unsuccessful at.

That's refreshing to see a signing like that, I didn't realise he was 31 though.

THATS THE KIND OF SIGNINGS WE SHOULD BE GETTING im rapped "SYDNEY FC GLAMOUR CLUB" its the kind of signings sydney/ the a-league needs, but players like corica arent exactly making sydney fc a glamour club. i cant see how any club can become a glamour club, when everyone can only spend the same amount on players.

dude you dont honestly think there gonna stick to the salary cap??? of course not. as there are no limits on what "sponsors" or benefits the clubs can offer, but still, look at our first 7 signings... not exactly glamour if u ask me 7 "decent" signings to date... 3 more under 20's to come leaving 10 more spots for "glamour" signings. all i am saying is, i am yet to see any type of glamour and we are basically 50% covered on the player front.

I'd have to say that would probably be the best time for Sydney FC to make a move on the player front. Corica is a good, solid signing. I think we should focus on the positives. We have a new league, capable of attracting the corporate dollar, crowds, and players from overseas. It would be unwise to automatically assume that all players will be interested. But signings like this we can see are stemming the tide of players on the way out of the country....
