The Sun Herald today reported that 1998 World Cup winner "has told Sydney FC to make him an offer". It's in the midst of some allegations of conflict of interest with manager Lou Sticca hired to recruit players for Sydney FC (that side of the story sounds like The Herald unecessarily kicking up shit to me), but the talk of Petit coming to Sydney FC is definately there:
"[Petit's manager] Barataud said he had spoken with Petit yesterday and the 34 year old was keen to resume his career in Australia after recovering from knee surgery. Petit is out of contract but training with Arsenal in London. "Emanuel said if Sydney were interested then to definately put something in writing and he will seriously consider it" Barataud said."
...So there you go. What does everyone reckon? Personally I think it's great news-Petit may be a little over the hill but he's a former Premier League and World Cup star and as bigger name as any A-League club could dream of having as of next year. I don't think anyone can name a player linked to the A-League in any serious capacity who would pull bigger crowds. If his manager is to be believed (and I can't see any alterior motive for making such a comment) he's keen on coming here, and for my mind if we could get 2-3 years out of him he'd fit the marquee bill perfectly. Petit wants an offer on the table, so it's now up to Sydney FC's wealthy backers to make it happen.

I cannot see Shearer leaving the Toon for SFC. He would be great but I cannot see it happening

Although Shearer would undeniably be a great pickup, the last I heard of him he was 37 (3 years Petit's senior, incidentaly), still playing very successfully in the EPL with plans to retire at season's end.
Even though he's approaching antique status id love to see him come to Australia-but is there any evidence out there at all to suggest he might be considering a move down under?

i have heard SBS throw his name round a bit...but if he is our marquee player next season he would certainly bring in the crowds and it wont hurt trying to offer him a deal and maybe a house in a wealthy suburb...i havent heard any newspapers or anything talking about emmanuel??...can you tell me where they menchined his named?

the report was in the Sun Herald this morning, buried in a report to do with conflict of interest with Sydney FC's player appoitment officer, and SBS seems to have caught up with it in the last coupla hours.

im all for aussies...i think we have some great young talent...that will be our future overseas stars and future socceroos...but we need a player like petit or shearer to bring people through the gates... its all good and well to get the aussies playing in these teams, but it seems only the local based aussie players are willing to come back just yet, so till then, i cant see why they wouldnt look abroad, especially in places asia and south america as it will make it something different to what the NSL was.

I mean we have young, talented players playing in the NSW premier leauge...like the striker for Bonnyrigg who scored two goals in the Johnny Warren cup final.. The blonde guy...anyone know his name??...i would also like to see one or two african or south amerian players playing for sydney fc...they have so many professionals over there that would love the money and lifestyle here..they are great technically...They would bring a new dimension in the midfield..more quick, short passing...rather then the typical australian Long ball system...

ok firstly on the petit issue he will be fit as arsenal r in such midfield woes they are gonna give him a short term contract........ secondly there have been tons of reports in the greek media about petit coming to olympiakos.........now these rumors sprung from petit talking to karembeu ( played for olympiakos for a long time was idolised and fell in love with the club) and karembeu said to petit that olympiakos is the ideal club it has good facilities Champions league strong team etc.............so who knows either oly sydney f.c or he may even stay longer with arsenal..............hopefully he comes to sydney F.C i would come to watch him play for sure and so would the entire non football population

;D
Yeah I just heard Ronaldinho was considering playing for Sydney FC as well.
and Patrick Vieira
and Michael Owen.
It's also rumoured that Arsene Wenger, holding a uni degree of some kind in economics was considering being the financial brains behind a big bid from Roman Abramovic, with ex-Brazilian great Socrates to be the coach.
All said they wanted to do it for a change of scenery, and to escape the pressures of European club football.
What a load of crap. It's just Sydney FC trying to make headlines again. Look at their signings so far. I can really see Petit Miam playing alongside the old NSL players that have been signed. He'd come here with a full head of hair, and leave a few weeks into his contract completely bald simply through frustration.
Give it a rest Tom Doumanis you goose, and Lou Sticca, get your hand off it!
