Hassler I can appreciate your sentiment. Mine is much the same. I find it ridiculous when people throw around these massive names. Although Petit isn't as massive as the likes of Bergkamp, Desaily, Rivaldo and most recently it seems Shearer. Expecting those players to come play here is bit far out. But if we do get Petit, I'd be happy with it but I'd rather not have him if it meant we had to offer such a large contract that the club would be in financial strife.

And don't forget that young player whose spot in the team he'd take. Don't forget that teams can only have 20-man squads. This is less than in the past, as in the past NSL teams had youth teams etc whose players could all be called upon on match days, so in effect you had 30 or 35 players (sometimes more) available on match days.

IMO the perfect player to sign. He plays in midfield which means he can influence the entire team and he can still make an impact. He won't be just coming here for retirement.

he's keen on coming here, and for my mind if we could get 2-3 years out of him he'd fit the marquee bill perfectly. Petit wants an offer on the table, so it's now up to Sydney FC's wealthy backers to make it happen. Yeah he would being something to the midfield but I think we would only get one year out of him. I don't think our ticket money should be spent on a marquee player who is close to retirement. I'd rather our marquee be a young gun who does/will play for Australia.

Can he speak English (serious question)? It will be hard enough to develop team spirit when 1 player is earning 10 times more than the others. If the marquee player can't communicate with his teammates he will never fit in and spectators will quickly lose interest.

www.tribalfootball.com/november/englsnews1211104.htmlFrench veteran Manu Petit could be set for a shock return to Arsenal. A midfielder injury crisis has forced Gunners boss Arsene Wenger to consider handing Petit a short-term deal, says the Daily Star. The former Arsenal and Chelsea midfielder has been training at Highbury to stay fit while he searches for a new club. Only this week Petit priced himself out of a move to Brescia. Club spokesman Gianluca Nani revealed: "We have about 50,000 Euros available and he demanded one million. "We have had superstars here like Roberto Baggio and Pep Guardiola, players with class but also with human and moral importance. Petit isn't the type of player we're interested in."

But do we really want to sign a player for those amounts of $$$ when he is at best a 1 or 2 year player?

Petit: Come and get me Sydney SBS
Former Arsenal and Chelsea star Emmanuel Petit has issued a challenge to A-League club Sydney FC to offer him a contract, promising to seriously consider it.
The 1998 French World Cup winning midfielder is out of contract but has been training with Arsenal in London and is keen to resume his career in new surroundings.
At 34, a move to Australia will suit the blonde-haired player with a sublime left-foot.
"Emmanuel said if Sydney were interested then to definitely put something in writing and he will seriously it," Petit's agent Alain Barataud told the Sun Herald.
Should Petit's signing work out, he will certainly prove a major drawcard for the Sydney club, which will be based at the 40 000-capacity Aussie Stadium.

1. why would petit play for arsenal again, and why would arsenal want him for that matter. I know they have key injuries like Gilberto and Edu. But have you seen there youngsters coming up like Fabregas and a few others that play in the carling cup. Wegner would want to give them a chance to prove themselves.
2. Sydney is a very International and cosmopolitan city. We are known all over the world for our laid back, beach lifestyles which attracts people to our fair city.
3. If they paid him more, they would make the money back in ticket and jersey sales.
4. He would show all the young aussie talents playing for Sydney FC all his WORLD CUP WINNING experince.
So you never know my fellow sydney followers. It doesnt hurt to dream. We got a chance of signing him boys. And if we dont, least we tried.
