As a Tobagonian, I am excited that Dwight has decided to sign with Sydney FC. I have been waiting for another reason to visit Australia (apart from its natural beauty), and this is it. Tobagonians have always been fond of "Down Under", and its people. I have good memories of watching cricket matches between Australia and the West Indies, and I have a really good feeling about this signing, and from what I know of Dwight I believe that he would represent our Island well - both on and off the field. Most folks may have heard the news reports about his misgivings, but the Dwight Yorke that we (Tobagonians) know is a wonderful, hospitable, caring individual. Give him a sincere opportunity, and Australia football, and footballers will benefit. Thanks Sydney FC. Good Luck. :)From: Baygoboy aye mon

for fuks sake who gives a shit what he did with his kid the only thing anyone should give a toss about is how he performs on the pitch That is a ridiculous statement. Remember the EPL Rape Case? Con Boutsianis the Getaway Driver? Mark Bosnich? There is more to it than what happens on the pitch. If Dwight was to get involved in a scandal (and he is no choirboy) how would the sponsors view this? I'm not condemning the bloke, I just have my reservations. Rather than being worshipped he probably needs people being tough on him and keeping him in line. If he's gonna get backslapped just for turning up here of course he will start taking the p!ss.

yeah the only event that got me angry was the rape allegations.. I totally agree there, but the other shit doesnt bother me
even when my club, Leicester was involved in a scandal in Spain when 3 of our players were arrested it didn't even bother me, after all players are only human and make mistakes..
shit ive done some stupid stuff in my life and i sure as hell wouldnt want people bringing it up every 5 minutes
Im personally excited to see him perform for our team, and am just not interested in his personal life. He made those decisions in his past, not now, and that is what we should be concerntrating on.

Its a sad day when people are getting excited by the arrival of a sad loser like dwight yorke. I am a birmingham season ticket holder and he is the worst player to pull on a birmingham shirt in three years. The reason he is not playing is not because of his contract, but the fact he is an arrogant t0ss pot who cant be arsed to put in 100%. Thats why he has scored only twice for us.
He will take the money, p1ss it up the wall and leave at the end of the season.
Dont get too excited just yet chaps, your in for a bit of a suprise if you think he is a great player.
What a waste of money!!!!!

Birmingham cancel Yorke's contract[/u] Birmingham have cancelled the contract of striker Dwight Yorke by mutual consent after just eight months at the club. Yorke, 33, is expected to join up with Australian A-League side, Sydney FC, in time for the start of their season in July. Yorke joined Blues from Blackburn in August in a £250,000 deal and made an encouraging start with goals as a substitute against Charlton and Newcastle. But the Trinidad and Tobago international made only four Premiership and two Carling Cup starts for Steve Bruce's side. Bruce intimated during the January transfer window that Yorke could leave to attain regular football, and the arrival of Walter Pandiani meant the former Manchester United star slipped further down the pecking order. Yorke's spell at the club sparked a row involving club owner David Sullivan after the player was subject of racial abuse from fans when he returned to Ewood Park with City in November. Sullivan accused Yorke of 'over-reacting' to the situation and more recently hit out at his fellow directors of not publicly supporting him over the issue. Yorke's spell in England spanned 16 years after he was signed for Aston Villa by Graham Taylor in 1989. He spent seven successful years at Villa before forming a prolific partnership with Andy Cole at Manchester United - a pairing which also teamed up at Blackburn but not with the same success. A club statement read: 'Birmingham City Football Club can today confirm that Dwight Yorke's contract has been cancelled by mutual consent. 'Both parties have agreed to terminate the contract so that Dwight can pursue a career in Australia. 'The club would like to take this opportunity to thank Dwight for his contribution to our season and wish him the best of luck for the future.' soccernet.espn.go.com/headlinenews?id=331735&cc=3436

Is it true that his contract got terminated at Birmigham? Apparently i heard that he is going to play on May 7th... his early release ahead of the end of the English season might allow him to also play in Sydney's first competitive fixture, the Club World Championship qualifier against Queensland Roar in Gosford on May 7.
Sydney FC coach Pierre Littbarski said last week that he would have to examine the player's match fitness before deciding whether he was capable of making the squad.www.smh.com.au/news/Football/Next-stop-Sydney-Yorke-severs-ties-with-Blues/2005/04/25/1114281508792.html

Dwight Yorke may have been released from his Birmingham City contract but Sydney FC's marquee signing will not be joining his new club in time for the Australian stage of next month's Club World Championship qualifiers.Yorke, 33, will instead remain in England for personal reasons, and at this stage is not due to join his Sydney FC teammates until July 1. Coach Pierre Littbarski, however, has not yet given up hope of having Yorke at his disposal for the Oceania section of the CWC qualifiers in June if Sydney FC win the right to represent Australia. "As coach, I want him here as soon as possible, but I believe there are some issues with his son," Littbarski said. "To have him in Tahiti [where the Oceania tournament will be played] would be very nice - we have many games and it would be a good chance to make him part of the team." The Australian leg of the CWC will be a knockout tournament held between May 7 and 15, with Sydney FC drawn against Queensland Roar in their opening game in Gosford on May 7. Advertisement AdvertisementAfter an unbeaten five-game build-up, which included the recent three-match tour of the United Arab Emirates, Sydney FC will round off their preparations with a final trial against the Australian youth (under-20) team at Bossley Park at 7 o'clock tonight. Littbarski will be without key defender Mark Rudan, who injured his hamstring in the UAE, and has three players - Jacob Timpano, Justin Pasfields and Mark Milligan - playing for the Young Socceroos. "It is not a good thing that Mark is injured, because we will have only 15 players for the match and now we have to change a few things," Littbarski said. "For us, this game is a very good test." Littbarski flew to Rockhampton at the weekend to assess Queensland Roar, only to discover that coach Miron Bleiberg had split his squad in half to play two different trial matches. "I didn't see the first game but I did see five or six starting players," Littbarski said. "The two strikers, [Royce] Brownlie and [Michael] Baird, moved very well and the Swiss defender [Remo Buess] was very confident. I think we will have to do a lot to beat them." In other news, New Zealand coach Ricki Herbert has pledged to give Australia a competitive outing in the Confederations Cup warm-up match in London on June 9. Despite the stocks of the All Whites being at an all-time low following their World Cup exit at the hands of Vanuatu last year, Herbert believes a combination of trans-Tasman rivalry and wounded pride will ensure his team gives the Socceroos a worthwhile challenge at Craven Cottage. Herbert yesterday named a 31-man preliminary squad, which will be reduced to 18 at the start of next week. Several graduates from the Olympic (under-23) team, which Herbert coached before being given the senior job earlier this year, are set to be promoted. "We've got an eye on the next World Cup in 2010, which is why we've thrown a lot of younger guys into the mix, but for the Australia game we'll also need to make sure we've got a reasonable amount of experience," Herbert said. "Players like Ryan Nelsen, Danny Hay and Ivan Vicelich will be the backbone, and I'm looking for some of the guys I had in the Olympic side to get into the starting line-up rather than sit on the bench. "We're going to London to introduce some new players to this level of football, but we also want to be performance-orientated. "In the long-term, it's probably going to take four or five years to turn things around, but right now we're also mindful of the need to do well. The game against Australia is about setting a benchmark for how we go about things further down the line." www.smh.com.au/news/Football/Littbarski-hopes-to-get-Yorke-on-the-ball-in-Tahiti/2005/04/27/1114462046977.html
