Australia’s participation in the various Asian Competition’s will become clearer in June, it appears the switch will be effective after the end of WC 2006, but its leading clubs will be invited to participate in next year's AFC Champions League.
‘As Australia's application to join the AFC is still in process, it is still too early to speculate whether Australian clubs will be taking part in next year's AFC Champions League. The matter should become clearer in June when the AFC holds its next round of Exco meetings’<br>

So Sydney FC will in all likelihood be playing in the CWC in December 2005 and at least one A-League club will be in the AFC League in 2006. Such exposure of our domestic club teams on the International stage will hopefully bring exposure and financial rewards that help Football dwarf those rival egg-shaped ball codes in Australia.

yeh cant wait to hear we have officially joined AFC and both club and country will obviously benifet from it. especially seeing A-League clubs i the AFC champions league cant wait for that and so hope sydney fc is in it just the extra home games would be a grate advantage to each club in the champions league as they would get fans for the A-League and champions league in the same week...BIG BOOST!!!

Does anyone know if only one team from Australia will be playing in the Champions league or if there might be two?
Alsa, are there any other Asian Leagues? Comparing it to the European UEFA Cup.

The top 16 nations get 2 spots. There is another comp for nations that are not in the top 16. Australia should be ranked in the top 16.

The Asian Champions League in 2006 will have 15 nations (the 14 below – plus AUSTRALIA) x 2 =30 teams plus previous winner and previous AFC Cup winner (See below) =32 teams
Asian Champions League 2005 Central and West Asia : Iran, Iraq, Kuwait, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Syria, UAE, Uzbekistan East Asia (6): China, Indonesia, Japan, South Korea, Thailand, Vietnam
AFC Cup 2005 Central and West Asia (3): Jordan, Lebanon, Turkmenistan East Asia (6): Bangladesh, Hongkong, India, Malaysia, Maldives, Singapore
Looking at this years Asian Champions League the competition commenced on 8th March, 2005.
Given a similiar commencement in 2006 , it would give ample time for the FFA to nominate the 2 Australian representatives from the A-League (I believe should be):
(1) First past the post (Champion) Decided 5th Febuary (2) Grand Final Winner (Cup Winner) Decided 26th Febuary (3) If same –Grand Final Runner up (Cup Winner) Decided 26th Febuary

We sure need one. It is bloody great for other teams too. If Sydney is the Glamour Club and we do make it, then there are still 2 other spots for teams to qualify, one for the champions league and one for the cup. I can't wait. Hopefully FFA will get it sorted out by then.

One concern i have over this is that the competition will be mainly in our off season. I can't see the Australian teams playing at their best if they are not playing regular matches during the same time. Our teams will not be match fit, but i guess just being there is good enough.
