Bottom line with a fledgling league..... Bums on seats, money 'evenly spread' in pockets As an outsider, I think a combination of Euro to get a Premiership Title, then a final series, aka FA Cup. This may be just the top 4 or for the sake of the current small league all 8. So as to reward the best team of the season, and to allow the other teams to be involved post season. It would be great finals experience for all players, and help to build character when travelling to foreign Series. IMHO VV

It should definetly be the euro way after the rounds are finished whoever is on top wins the leage and is champs of the league simple as that and winning the league position should get the team into the asian champions league. Along the season though i think we should have a fa cup sorta comp wif all A-League clubs and posibly the highest state league clubs participate.

Well there's a finals series for the first year, and I can't see it changing anytime soon. As people have said, it's a massive money boost for the league.

It's not nice to win the league convincingly then get beat in grand final by a team that finished 5th 20 points behind you. The football association should start an FA Cup competition, get the state teams involved. In other countries thats how the small teams stay afloat. The game will thrive at lowwer league level (feeder clubs) + A League if the money is there. The Euro way is great....if you're in Europe! Most countries there have at least 2 divisions, which means promotion and relegation battles with the bottom 3-4 spots and the fight for UCL and UEFA Cup places at the top - 3, 4 up to as many as 6 or 7 in the big leagues. This maintains the interest in the final rounds without the need for a finals series. Plus you have FA cup and equivalent comps in most countries. Now to the A-League: no knockout comp, no promotion and relegation, and it's safe to say at this stage that only the A-League winner will be in the Asian Champions League. This means an interest in just 1 spot. Without a finals series, at least in the early years, you run the risk of a lot of 'dead rubbers' towards the end of the competition. Remember in the NSL a few years back when Perth Glory had the minor premiership wrapped up with 4-5 weeks to go. If it was first past the post, the whole of the last month would have been meaningless. Should this happen in the A-League, players would lose interest, crowds would dwindle and it wouldn't be a good look for the game. Australia is not Europe. I don't think we should copy anyone - lets do things our own way! Once we get more teams with more Champions League spots, or if we get another division or a separate FA Cup style comp as Pompey FC suggested, then we should have first past the post. But now that we have just this 8-team mini league leave the finals series as is.

Does Asia have a Uefa Cup type equivalent? Maybe the teams that come in 2nd 3rd & 4th play in that comp. It will give teams something to aim for if we ever had the european style league.

um
looking at the AFC website there are 2 competitions
1. AFC Champions League 2. AFC Cup
It looks like they are split between nations. ie. nations with the better league etc are entered in the CL where as the others are entered in the Cup.
here is some info on the CL

It would be miracle for an oz team to make the semis of the Asian Champions League let alone win the thing due to the large travel distances for each away match. Imagine having to travel 7 - 10 hrs many times a season to compete.

Dude... they will only have to do it once each. Will all of their away games be in oz? I dont think so. Whereas all our away games will be in asia.

Yeah, its stupid having Australia in Asia - we should join Oceania! It makes sense since NZ are in that conference. Has anyone thought of this before? ;D

IMHO VV I agree with you totally, I recon it should be a pure league model deciding the A-League Champions, then after the conclusion a cup style (give it some name) tournament with the top 4 for another title. In this way the fans get their champions at the end of the league, and the greedy federation gets their cash with the extra games, whilst one club may gain alot more money with a double title and so on, hehe

I don't think anyone has mentioned this but we get two spots in the ACL, so you could have the top placed side from the league matches given the first spot and then the winner of the GF gets the other spot. Cus SFC going to win both then the other finialist quailfiers. The FFA haven't said how the teams are going to be decided, but i think this is the best way until we get a KO Cup happening. This way you get both euro style and aussie style. The overall winner is still the GF winners, but one of the main objectives for all the teams is to get into Asia, so the winner of the league can achieve that objective.

As our league is off kilter with the state leagues. It would be great to see a tournament kick off at the end of all the state leagues with the winners of each drawn in with the 8 A-league teams which can run at the beginning of the A-league season. Winner gets an ACL spot.
