Parma duo excused SBS
SBS TV's Toyota World Sport has EXCLUSIVELY revealed, Italian-based Socceroos Marco Bresciano and Vince Grella have been excused from this month's FIFA Confederations Cup, to let them focus on the relegation play-off with Serie A club Parma.
The Gialoblu faces Bologna on June 14 and 18 with top flight survival up for grabs.
After days of protracted negotiations between Football Federation Australia and Parma, Australia national team coach Frank Farina decided to leave Bresciano and Grella out of his Confederations Cup squad.
"I decided it was best for the team as they prepare for the Confederations Cup and the World Cup qualifiers later in the year and in the best interests of the players that they not be selected," Farina told AAP.
"It's a difficult situation for all involved. Both players love playing for their country and at the same time feel a responsibility to help their club."
"It's a shame they'll miss the tournament but it will give others an opportunity to step up."
Harry Kewell is the other big name absentee after he underwent groin surgery last week, otherwise, the 23-man squad has a familiar look about it.
The likes of Mark Viduka, Tim Cahill, Craig Moore, Josip Skoko and Mark Schwarzer are all there for the two week tournament, which kicks off for Australia against host nation Germany, on the morning of June 16 (AEST).
Australia squad is:
Goalkeepers: Zeljko Kalac (Perugia), Michael Petkovic (Trabzonspor), Mark Schwarzer (Middlesbrough)
Defenders: Jon McKain (National Bucuresti), Ljubo Milicevic (FC Thun), Craig Moore (Free), Kevin Muscat (Melbourne Victory), Lucas Neill (Blackburn Rovers), Tony Popovic (Crystal Palace), Tony Vidmar (NAC Breda) Midfielders: Tim Cahill (Everton), Scott Chipperfield (Basel), Simon Colosimo (Perth Glory), Jason Culina (FC Twente), Ahmad Elrich (Busan I'Cons), Brett Emerton (Blackburn Rovers), Josip Skoko (Genclerbirligi), Mile Sterjovski (Basel), Luke Wilkshire (Bristol City),
Strikers: John Aloisi (Osasuna), Archie Thompson (Melbourne Victory), Mark Viduka (Middlesbrough), David Zdrilic (Sydney FC).
Birmingham's Stan Lazaridis was not considered due to injury while 1860 Munich striker Paul Agostino and Leicester's left-sided midfielder Danny Tiatto again miss out after being overlooked for this week's international against New Zealand at Craven Cottage in London.

At least there was some common sense used by the FFA/Farina by leaving Grella and Bresciano out

By leaving out players so they can compete for their club teams (as this is where they have their minds) illustrates the problems besetting the game of Australian Football. The importance of the Confed Cup, moving to Asia, World Cup qualifications, etc is that these are revenue streams that will hopefully dramatically increase the cash reserves of the FFA so they can bring more players back to the A-League so these club-country issues are minimised. When the FFA recently let known they are building a fighting fund to ‘top up’ one Australian International for each A-League club in season II shows the reshaping of Australian Football is being driven by a governing body that is fully aware of all the issues.
First crawl (2003-2007), then Walk (2008-2014), then run (2015+).

I'm glad Moore and Muscat are in the squad, our defense hasnt been performing of recent. They may be old but I'd like to see them at the back.

It was the right decision - as Australia needs both Bresciano and Grella to be playing top flight football. You just can't have your top players playing in the second division anywhere in Europe.
However, I'm amazed that the Italian FA haven't been forced to move the playoffs earlier (and that they haven't been more widely condemned for their poor scheduling). It is clearly their fault for clashing with a FIFA tournament, and they should have held their playoffs already, when there aren't any games on.
