Surely now we can start a knock out cup to run alongside the league. No more semi finals, grand finals etc but first past the post in the league for the title and a knock out cup for the sudden death, every team has a shot on the day bit.Every club in Oz is eligible to enter from church teams up.Maybe regional for the first few rounds but if you can't afford the travel costs you forfeit.Eventually the state league and a-league teams come in.Why not?

Yeah, this idea has been floating around for a while. Its probably a good thing, if we can make it similar to the world-famous FA Cup in England. The excitiment of do-or-die quick 90 mins of non-stop attack. If we do have this I think it should be exclusice to A-League teams only. Mainly becuase I feel if we are trying to move away from all the old stuff, its best not to involve elements of the past.
It could either be run parallel to the Premier Season. But personally I'd like to see it be run after the Premier season is finished. Some people were saying theres to few rounds. So this way it could add a couple more games and both club, players and league could generate extra cash.
But the main ideal should be that its different style to the Premier league, this should be exciting attacking football with an added incentive for goals. For example team that scores most goals at the end of comp gets some sort of cash bonus.

IMO, the only thing that would make a cup style knock-out competition interesting would be including the state league teams. Open it up to any team that can afford entry. I think it would be great to see my local side (full of over-weight 40 year olds) up against Perth Glory or Sydney FC.
If you leave it to A-league teams people will get bored.

You would have to have some sort of seeding in place with the A-Leage clubs joining in in the 3rd or 4th round, so the overweight 40 yr olds would need to have won a few matches before coming up against Perth Glory. This sort of cup comp is a very good way of taking A-League teams to places they would not otherwise go like Albury or Hobart. Travel is the big expense, but with a sponsor like Qantas it would be feasible.

Although the establishment of an 'Australian FA Cup' including state league teams (what's the point of having an 8-team knockout cup?) is an attractive idea that could no doubt see the light of day sometime in the near future, i believe the ASA is already pursuing what I see as a better option by talking to some Asian clubs about the prospect of a short cup competition at the end of the first season. I believe John O Neill has stated that the top 2 or 3 A-League teams would compete with around 5 asian club sides over a period of a few weeks in some sort of knockout format. Whilst this would only give the season a few more games, I think it would be a great idea in that it gives the top teams something more to strive for other than the league itself and it could serve as another important stepping stone in building ties with asia and, hopefully, entry to the Asian champions' league.

I think the top 2 Premier leauge teams from each state should go into a knock,2-legged competition. Then the top 4 verse to top 4 A-leauge sides. Two legged games.

A knockout comp with some "country" sides would be very interesting. And (as been said prev) would take teams around the country to spread the good word..

To make a cup interesting it will need a lot more teams than the 8 A-League teams. Let the state teams in/
It also might be an idea to not let the NZ team in the cup, but get them to play in an NZ cup.

i am all for a FA cup style competition run during the A-league season. However, i dont believe that we should take away the concept of semi-finals and grand finals. We are trying to create revenue streams, not take them away. First past the post was used early in the NSL to little effect in conjunction with a cup, no need to go backwards

If you are first at the end of the season that is it.... you won. I agree that we need it for now though, just for that extra revenue.

I dont know.. I guess I was just raised on the whole "Grand Final" glitz and hype.. I love grand final week (no matter what the code) its just one big party.. Sorry, but I hate the idea of finals. How can a team thay has say: P38 W 38 D0 L0 F 110 A 10 P 114 not be considered the champions. Why should a small mistake in one game over the season cost them the title? Why should a team that finishes 4th be given the change to be champions? Top the league, and you should win it. As the Glory Coach said a couple of years ago "It might be the Australian way, but that does not make it the right way"

Agreed, I also think its unfair that a teams works so hard all season and then can end up winning nothing. We must have competition with Premiers. But more to the point, I think everyone is in favour of having a FA cup style comp to acompany the A-League. The only question is to involve state teams or not. I think not but then again an 8-team comp might be a tad below par.
