Young Socceroos defeated
Australia Soccer Association
The Qantas Young Socceroos (u-20s) have been defeated 3-1 in the opening international match of their South American tour against Uruguay in Montevideo.
Stuart Musialik scored the lone goal for the Australians in the first half after Uruguay had scored two goals in quick succession for a 2-1 half-time scoreline.
Despite the result the Qantas Young Socceroos performed impressively in a match in which they created as many scoring opportunities as the home team. The Australians, without Tottenham Hotspur's Spase Dilevski who had only arrived from England on match day, were also hamstrung by the 80th minute dismissal of substitute Jay Lucas who was sent off for a second bookable offence.
The Qantas Young Socceroos started the match more enterprisingly than their opponents with Billy Celeski and Musialik both having strikes on goal. The Australian side also had strong claims to be awarded a penalty for handball on the half-hour mark.
The Uruguayans came back strongly forcing a fine save from Australian goalkeeper Adam Federici before scoring twice in the space of six minutes. Firstly an unstoppable long-range shot opened the scoring before a break down the left flank saw the far post cross headed home as Uruguay doubled their advantage.
Two minutes before the interval the Australians pulled a goal back when Chris Tadrosse made a break down the left side before pulling the ball back for Musialik to finish with a fine strike into the top corner of the goal.
The Qantas Young Socceroos held possession for lengthy periods in the second half with Tadrosse again the provider for the best scoring opportunity as he set up Mark Bridge but the close range shot was well saved by the Uruguayan goalkeeper.
Uruguay's third and final goal came in the 78 minute courtesy of a well-struck indirect free-kick from 20 metres.
The Qantas Young Socceroos will complete their tour with further international fixtures against Argentina and Chile.
Australian line-up: Adam Federici, Mark Milligan, Jacob Timpano, Trent McClenahan, Aaron Downes, Stuart Musialik, Matt Danskin (Nick Ward H/T), Billy Celeski (Frank Lagana 68'), Chris Tadrosse, Kristian Sarkies, Mark Bridge (Jay Lucas 65').
