Australia are now ranked 49th in the world, the biggest movers of the month in world football! Hopefully this time we can not only stay within the top 50, but try to get into the top 40, then 30, then 20....wishfull thinking?

Australia typically rises in the rankings as a result of good scores in the Oceania WC qualifiers. The rankings favour countries that play lots of matches so with a fuller schedule planned for the national team there is defineitely potential to move up quite a bit more. The Confederations Cup is also weighted higher than friendlies, so a few good results there will help.

come the end of the WC qualifiers we will be ranked up in the low 30s, if we make the WC, we will go into the the top 20.

I think we got as high as 35th, leading up to the South American playoff in 2001, against the U-R-Gay's.
I think Norway is hovering around that part of the ladder currently, so next week should provide a good guage as to whether or not we are fringe World Cup qualification contenders.

The FIFA rankings dont really represent the true stature of team. As said above you are favoured if you play more games. So considering the amount of game we play its no shock where we are ranked, when looking at our team.
