The Reds are long-term favourites to sign the Spanish international in the New Year, with the player seemingly certain to leave his homeland due to a lack of first team action. However, Rafael Benitez will face some stiff competition for Morientes, with his agent Gines Carvajal revealing that there are a total of FOUR Premiership clubs in the chase, as well as two from France.
“Morientes now has four offers from different English clubs and two from French teams,” Carvajal said. "Therefore we will have to wait and see what happens.
"He is very clear in his mind that he wants to play and wants to do so in a great and competitive team. We're not considering a loan deal. What we want is a transfer.”<br> It is believed that Real are prepared to allow Morientes to leave, yet after rejecting a Liverpool bid of £3.5million they revealed they want DOUBLE that amount.
However, it is now understood that Real have contacted Liverpool and told them they would accept £5million – IF they are allowed first option on Steven Gerrard in the summer.
Gerrard has hinted he may leave Merseyside at the end of the season if the club fail to improve this season, and Real are determined not to miss out should he pack his bags.
