now some of the issues arising with the marquee player are...
Do the club want him to be instantly recognisable to the non-football people in Sydney? If so then they have to go for a high profile player that plays in one of the top leagues.
Or...
Do the club want a fantastic player, who no-one has heard of, and let him make a name for himself?

Whats so great about Petit? There is actually a remote chance we'll get him, unlike anyone you listed there.

Petit might be signing for Arsenal again due to Edu stalling on new contract. Wenger says Edu might get frozen out. The players above will want paying, can Sydney FC afford 15000 to 20000 a week because they're probably getting paid double if not more than that at moment.

I think the real secret is to find anyone's whos prepared to come here for what would be peanuts in Europe. It is not matter a choice. If Petit's prepared to do that then he is the one.

We don't have lots of money to throw at them, however - we have one of the best lifestyles in the world. You can't possibly tell me a player will turn down the sunshine of Sydney for the bitter cold of Europe will you?
Face it, maquee signings will probably be 31yo+, so they would have made their money in the past. Great lifystyle plus earning some cash on the side is the perferct carrot IMO.

Very good players have very good lifestyles anyway in cold Europe or not. They make very big dosh there, people who make very big money have good lifestyle anyway. Australia is a very nice place to live and raise family though. Nice climate nice beaches and friendly people.

I am not sure about the European lifestyle. I think anywhere where it is not too cold in the winter is full of suicidal drivers.

To trueblue, c'mon mate those players you listed there or most of them are still playing in top European leagues, there is no way an A- League team is going to be able to afford to fork out big $$ and match what they are getting from the clubs over there, really a bit of common sense would show that!

Some big names are actually willing to sacrifice an enormous payout to be able to build up leagues in countries whose local leagues need help reaching the status of the English or Spanish leagues. Take Rivaldo signing with Greek team Olympiakos, for example.

I am not sure if you are being sarcastic Here are Rivaldo's thoughts prior Money was a factor in the decision, but I also think there was an interest in playing with a top end club albeit in a smaller league. I also think that players are wising up and thinking you are better off chasing glory in a smaller league than ending up on the bench at the biggest clubs or playing with one of the bottom placed teams in the real major leagues. This trend will be good for the A-league.
