Media Release
Ian Crook joins Sydney FC
Former Spurs and Norwich City midfielder Ian Crook was today (Thursday 25 November) appointed as assistant coach at A-League club Sydney FC.
Crook will oversee the start-up of football operations for the club and plan for the inaugural pre-season training in 2005.
“This is a crucial appointment for Sydney FC, an important building block for establishing the football operations,” said the Sydney FC chairman, Mr Walter Bugno.
“Ian Crook has 20 years’ experience as a professional player at the highest level and is one of the best young coaches around.
“His local knowledge after five years in the former NSL will also prove invaluable and his work as a youth coach at club and international level fits perfectly with our plans.”
Mr Bugno reaffirmed Sydney FC is committed to a global search for a high-profile Head Coach.
“The appointment of an assistant will allow that search to continue,” said Mr Bugno, ”while at the same time allowing the football operations infrastructure to be put in place.”
Ian Crook says the chance to join Sydney FC was too good to refuse.
“This is a fabulous opportunity to work at what I’m sure will be the biggest club in the country,” said Crook.
“The ambition of Sydney FC to be the best in the A-League, to qualify for the FIFA World Club Championship and take part in the Asian Champions League means everyone at the club will have to go to the next level. It’s a wonderful challenge.”
Great news! Chippy is a great coach and to be honest, I'm really surprised he accepted a more junior role. I would have thought he's be able to get a head coaching position elsewhere. The club must be aiming VERY high for the senior position.
Welcome aboard Chippy.

For Chippy to have taken the assitant role, he must have liked what he heard and have a good idea of who we are after for the senior job. It's really look good at the moment.

Congratulations to Ian I am sure he will do an excelent job.
Does a head coach mean he will actually coach or just have the role of technical director?
I would not want to see these high profile overseas coaches swaning in and out when it suits them to take care of other interests leaving the assistant to cover for him.
This would be an expensive option.

Hmm, as a Newcastle supporter I am disappointed that he was let go by us.
Not only because I thought he was a good coach, but I'm gonna have to change my username on a whole heap of forums!

So yes, the head coach will be doing all the coaching, with the assistant giving advice etc.
