I have heard any concerns about Sydney FC first up game in Tahiti…
I think the highest standards of the old NSL were the highest in the late 80’s/ early 90’s, then sadly the player drain kicked in… since there has been a steady decline…
The A-League has started a turn around in domestic standards – it has been estimated I it wasn’t for the A-league some 50- 60 players would not be here playing.
At the end of the season we will be able to gauge at what standard we are at. But it looks promising – Yorke, Zelic etc.
As for Sydney FC in Tahiti, previous sides have struggled:
In 1999 South Melbourne (and they included : Steve Isoifidis , David Clarkson , Michael Curcija ,Vaughan Coveny ,Steve Panopoulos ,Liparoti Trimboli and others )needed two late injury time goals to defeat the side from the Solomon Islands 2-1 in their first game.
In 2001 Wollongong (and they included: Scott Chipperfield, Stuart Young, Paul Reid, Saso Petrovski, David Huxley, Dino Mennillo, David Cervinski and others) struggled to beat Napier City (NZ) 1-0 in the group stage and then Tafea FC in the final 1-0
I think the amount of money they are playing for ( affects nerves) as well as playing conditions levels things out. But lets hope Sydney prevail – everyone will be a winner – they collect $500,000 the other seven collecting $100,000 and the FFA collect $50,000
