Toyota World Sport can EXCLUSIVELY reveal that Sydney FC is set to announce Roy Hodgson as its coach for the inaugural A-League season.
Currently coaching Viking Stavanger in Norway, Hodgson is best known for taking Switzerland to the World Cup finals in the USA in 1994, and its highest ever world ranking of three.
Since then, he's held the reins at a number of European clubs including Italian giant Inter Milan, Udinese, Tottenham and Blackburn Rovers.
During his visit to Australia as coach of the FIFA All Stars World XI in 1999, Hodgson met with Soccer Australia officials with a view to leading the Olyroos during their 2000 Sydney Olympic Games campgain.
However, an agreement could not be reached while he has also been linked with the Socceroos job in the past.
In 2002, the Englishman was appointed coach of the United Arab Emirates national team but was sacked earlier this year after the UAE's poor performance at the Gulf Cup.
Hodgson remains highly regarded in Europe, and was part of UEFA's technical study group at Euro 2004.

A big name. Whichever way you look at it, its good I think. Sure, you can remember his season with Blackburn (oh and when did he manage Spurs?), but this league will obviously be a bit different to that of the EPL so I think its very positive.
Now for players.

Hodgson wouldn't know the meaning of the word pizzas, let alone pizzazz! Doumanis has been quoted as saying he wants the team to play with pizzazz, and "razzle dazzle" this city.....under Hodgson, they'll play the same way as Inter did, and Udinese, and more recently, the UAE.......
BORING BORING SYDNEY!! (I can just hear it now! hahahahahahahahahh)

This is tremendous news. Whether you think he's a good coach or not, he's very well respected around the world (well, maybe not amongst Bristol City supporters) and so will attract players a class above, just through reputation alone. I'm also pleased that the deafening silence from the club has finally ended. This makes me much more optimistic for my new club's future.
Well done.

i think if he gets the right players there will be razzle dazzle. and now he is coaching a class below blackburn so i dun think he is too bad of a coach. i guess there will not be a technical director.

Great news. Whether he is a top coach by European standards is arguable, but comapared to the likes Cullina and Theodorakopolajfkdalfadfdkal;afda; he is experienced and suggests that we are aiming high. The fact is us passionates will go no matter what, but the average punter is enticed by big names, and Hodgson is one.

He managed to unify the 3 language groups in the Swiss national team (German, French and Turkish ;D). And is somebody from OUTSIDE the Australian football goldfish bowl. Maybe we can sign Nick Theo as an assistant coach? JF

Good signing. A manager with a name for himself internationally, just what this club needs to get some interest from the general public.
At least it shows the board members of Sydney FC are actually doing something at the moment.

Hodgson forced to turn down Sydney FC tribalfootball.com - November 17, 2004
Viking Stavanger manager Roy Hodgson has turned down an offer from Sydney FC to become their inaugural head coach. The ambitious Australian start-up club had been in talks with Hodgson about a move Down Under, but the Englishman rejected the deal yesterday as he is still under contract to Norway's Viking.
Hodgson made his decision public yesterday morning, less than two hours after Australian TV station, SBS, chose to report a story claiming he was on the verge of signing for Sydney FC.
The former Inter Milan and Blackburn Rovers boss revealed he had been tabled the offer by Sydney FC football advisor, Lou Sticca.
"I was very flattered by the offer from Sydney FC," Hodgson said. "Lou Sticca made me a fantastic proposal, which was very exciting from a coach's point of view.
"But I am under contract at Viking Stavanger and that is where I will stay."
While disappointed at developments over the last 24 hours, Sticca and Sydney FC chairman Walter Bugno are determined to bring to Australia a high-profile coach to lead the glamour club in the country's new A-League competition next year.
