I've been having second thoughts on this whole concept. I dont see why we should have this 'marquee' player considering it wont be anyone relly good. I mean people who say we will get the likes of Zola, Bergkamp, Baggio and Desaly are just dreaming. Those players would more likely to go to those gulf states where they are getting paid enormous ammounts of money, ammounts I doubt we could compete with.
So what then? Are we going to get a player good but not good enough for the gulf states to take on. Its a waste of money. LIke Warren said why pay one player the waged of 3 younger players.
Let us develope our own home-grown hero's. ATM with 8 teams only the best players will make it into the squads and thus we'll have enough quality.

In Sydney-probably the most cutthroat Sporting market in the world, a football club that has the opportunity to sign a marquee player should get one. It's as simple as that. We can talk about making our own heroes, buying from Asia/Sth America and giving the young guys a chance all we want, but if you really want to make it big in a city with such a mind-boggling array of sporting events for punters to choose from, Sydney FC will in its first few seasons probably need a household footballing name as a pull factor. Althouth the prospect of attracting Bergkamp is absolutely ridiculous, who's to say we can't lure someone of Desailly, Baggio or Sheringham's calibre? (Although personally I'm hanging out for Bosnich's comeback ;D) Surely the lifestyle Sydney offers as well as the infinately more relaxed Media will be a greater pull factor than monetary benefits for such players who, realistically, need not work another day in their lives.
In the future I hope Marquees are not needed. And hell, if all goes to plan they won't be. But as the club is just starting-and is looking to find its feet in such a cuthroat market, I personally think a marquee player would be a great place to start.

We can't be buying marquee players all the time. We should buy prospect players who will give us a return so we can buy further future prospect young players.

What about the idea of using the marquee player to keep a young talent in Australia for even longer? I.e, not just keeping a 16 year-old here until they're 18-19, which would happen with in the salary cap, but keeping an 18 year-old here until he's 22-23? That way we have one young player who we not only get to see nurtured in their early days as a professional but then also flourish in their early twenties before we simply can't hold on to them any longer? And another thing I thought of, if this were viable, it would drive their transfer price up a lot higher, giving us lots of money to replace them/spend on other things.

There is also the option in the future to use the marquee position to keep a very good Aussie player here for another season instead of heading off to Europe for better money.

Well hopefully one day the league will be successful enough that the whole salary cap will be gone completely. Although that is many many years away.

why is the salary not just, say, 2 mil or 1.8 mil. this would serve teams like perth better who dont want a marquee player

why is the salary not just, say, 2 mil or 1.8 mil. this would serve teams like perth better who dont want a marquee player i guess the cap is conservative so clubs dont fold in the first season or two. i think ull find come 3 - 5 years time, the cap will be somewhere around 3mil, bring it inline with other top grade sport in australia (NRL) that is, if the league is a sucess. the cap may stay where it is if the interest isnt there. for me. i would of rather have seen the cap be at 2million, and have no marquee player. but if this is the route we are heading then, a marquee player (ie, someone with a name) must be obtained by all clubs.

A marquee player just makes it easier for the media to hype the game up for non(yet) fans etc.Makes the game easier to sell to the as yet unconverted.

unconverted... dont worry about them... it is the the soccer followers that we want because if they all come no stadium is big enough in sydney to hold them... if we can get 20 000 to aussie stadium to watch the turks play then why dont we bring hakan suker as our marquee player to entice the turks then we know we can have atleast 15000 turks there every week but then again maybe not...

Sydney FC is not about enticing the Ethnic Supporter.
It is about enticing the Anglo Saxon supporter.

no it's not. its about enticing ALL supporters Exactly the comment above is ignorant. The whole emphasis on this new league was that clubs attract an area not one community. Anyway some good points, a marquee player would help with the media hype. But still I dont see us getting anyone of high stature, if we do, then ok. But I'd hate to see clubs splashing big amounts on mediocre players, just becuase they can or because of club rivalry.
