Is it just me, or are others really worried about the standard of the national team? The game against NZ was nothing other than a load of crap. I could hardly say that anyone performed with any dignity. How on earth did chippers get MOM? Had to be one of his worst performances on the field, continually losing out and misfiring golden opportunities. The amount of chances we had, not to mention the dubious team selection has got me really worried about qualifying, particularly after seeing highlights of the columbia game. Quite frankly (pun), frank either has to go, or we need a TD with skill quick smart. Our team looks slower, more unskilled, older and match 'fitless' than i've seen for years. How can you select players for the confed cup that have hardly kicked a ball in 6 months?

Sterjovski in a lone striker role? Says it all really. Not liking our chances for November....

Sorry guys. Its too late to jump off the Socceroos bandwagon now. You will have to wait until the next stop.

FFS! This is ridculous. All the negativity in Aust football circles is beyond a joke. (see TWG forum)
Chips deserved MOM.....he had a good game, and together with Skoke, was one of the few players who showed a bit creativity in attempting open up a resolute defence. There's a reason he lost the ball on ocassion.....he was trying to do something with it. His passes were mostly good, his touch was good and his running was fine. He isn't the man to criticise today. If you wanna have a go at someone, have a go at Emmo and Sterj who simply were not up to international standard.
The result was not THAT bad. So-f**king-what that it was against an understrength Kiwi team. Being understength (and generally crap even when at full stength) doesn't mean they can't organise a defence which is hard to open up. Even so, we did open them up on enough ocassions. The finishing was poor, yes, but thats what you get when you scrape the bottom of the barrel. And remember, had we put one away in the first 20min, the result would have been very different.
I thought Farina for once was relatively blameless. Yeah, the formation is still a waste of space, and his selection of that treetrunk Sterj ahead of Archie were failings, but really, it was a more a product of being met by a surprising tough opponent. Don't let the stereoptypes lead you into dismissing NZ's ability.
Don't give so much weight to final result (which we won mind you lol). What is more important is how we played, and I didn't think it was that bad. Yeah, a 6/10 performance, but given 3 key players in Bresc, Dukes and Harry were out and it was a friendly, the future isn't so grim. World Cup? 50-50 atm (or at worst, 40-60)..... but remember getting shafted in a two game playoff is a two way street. Maybe for once we could have the luck.

Well your expectations are certainly different from mine. I just think the overall strengh we have is not up to scratch leading into the serious end. The negativity is there for a reason, it's downright panic.
You were certainly watching a different game to me if you though Chippers deserved MOM. It was truly awful.
I like your optimism, but from what I saw of Columbia, we're gonna get smashed.
The back 4 is where the real problem lies. We can score goals. As always, it's letting em in.

Chippers deserved MOM I reckon. Did it all well, always tried to open them up and pinged in a bunch of crosses. It's not his fault the FF is sooooooo f*cken stupid to play the 4-3-3 when we have no real strikers.
A 4-4-1-1 or plain old 4-4-2 would've been the go.
Don't forget Chippers set up Colosimo's winner beautifully.
Overall thoughts:
Sterjovski - is a wide player not a big centre-forward type. Not his role at all
Emmo - over elaborates far too much sometimes. It really annoys me to see him trying to dribble past 3 guys when he can release a teammate further up much sooner.
Skoko - played well but I can't see him ahed of Kewell, Emmo, Grella, Brseciano, Chipperfield or Cahill. Teriffic commitment and excellent cover in midfield though.
Cahill - subdued b/c we didn't have a target man for him to make his late runs into the box.
McKain - pretty good I thought, is improving with every game but I can't see him ahead of Grella in the pecking order.
Neill - did ok. Overlapped on occassion well and kept his wing under control.
Moore and Poppa - improved on the Iraq showing at least. Still occasional lapses in concetration especailly defending set pieces
Muscat - played very well I thought (surprisingly). Emmo didn't use himm enough on the overlap.
Schwarzer - nothing to do really, kept up his concentration well
Kalac - good to see him get a run, terrific save from close range
Elrich - his pace injected more aggrssion and lifted the tempo of the game
Colosimo - tried for the killer ball too much, a bit wasteful. Put away the goal neatly
Milicevic - very assured in a cameo role
Any thoughts?

It was your typical trans-tasman match. Long periods of possession from the roos with a couple of long ball counter attacks leaving us red faced. As I watch Sterjovski run around making no inroads (Newsflash Frank: Sterjovski plays in the midfield with Basel) I was wondering why Milicic wasn't selected. His natural goalscoring ability is something we'll miss in the Confederations Cup. I'm quite glad we don't have Archie Thompson. My god son, your a striker, you shouldn't be missing in the box by 5 metres. Also, watching Chipperfield play as he did you can understand why Arsenal were linked with him. Quiet a talent. Some little quirkies I had was why Kalac is letting that grey hair through and how shocking Dorigo's commentary was. Piss him off.

Quite honestly I was really relieved to see us score one in the end! I was telling all my foreign friends how we would spank those sheep-shaggers.
And I cannot understand the whole lone striker thing. Hasn't Frank failed enough times using that tactic? Oh and that 4-3-3 they keep bragging about, it's only a glorified 4-5-1.

Its like the Eddie Thomson glory days. I stopped caring about the Socceroos once they just played one striker and started caring again when new coaches started the 4-4-2. Now I find myself not caring any more. The last thing Australia needs is a defensive national side.

that had to be one of the worst games id watched us play against such a shit team...no offence but no matter wat ppl say new zealand are shit and if we cant break that defence then forget about world cup. and that formation is shit even wen managing the best team in the world so for us to have that formation is a complete joke plus we still defended shit even though we got a clean sheet. i just wish we had sacked farina as i blame him for all this why didnt we sack him wen we lost to new zealand to qualify for the confed cup last time,i hate to say but now its too late to sack him we gotta hope he gets us into world cup if not sack him the next day. i cant see how we played i think it was 4-4-2 against england in london beat them 3-1 played excellent and now hes changing the formation to this crap where its failed against iraq and now new zealand wen will he learn that 4-4-2 best suits australia.

TBH I always get very dissapointed when we only beat NZ by one or two. I mean I appreciate that NZ have some good players but for sake we have way more. We should be killing them!! I dont know if it's that NZ step up to the game as its against us, or that we do not. Or perhaps even worse which I'm already seeing is that we just dont seem to click as a team. I long for the days we beat England 3-1(?) when the entire team played as a unit and our star players actually rose to the occasion.
