I just read today that over half a million people watched the Champions League final - despite the unearthly hour.
I can't imagine that any other sport in Australian would get that kind of figure.
Add this to all the other signs that our football is the number one football code in Australia:
- Most played sport in all regions, across all age groups - The last world cup final got better TV ratings than either the AFL or NRL grand finals of that year - despite Australia not even taking part! - The 4000 - 5000 fans watching the West Ham promotion game last week at live venues.
In my mind, there is no question that Australia is full of football supporters. The problem until now has been that we all follow overseas teams, rather than the local product. I can't wait until the A-League changes this.
Hopefully soon the more biased media will realise that it is in their commercial interests to follow our game (being a widely followed football code), and will get behind us instead of attacking us.

I heard they are thinking of ripping out all the seats at the SFS to make it standing room only so we can cram more supporters into stadium.

They will hang off the roof and include drink holders and spittoons. Can't wait for the season to kick off.

If the league gets their promo right, and the product is good. I can't see why we can't have regular crowds of 20,000 in three to four years. Awesome. I can't wait to convert my league loving relatives to football in OZ. ;D
