Last time the Australian team South Melbourne got the raw end of the stick in terms of the groups, but they did get to play against some top sides.
The difference in the next one is they take away one European side and one South American side and it has become sudden death. Only two clubs have been decided so far and they are a Costa Rican side and Liverpool. I would say the Costa Rican side is an upset winner over stronger Mexican sides. The African side would be considered the weakest opposition and Sydney has a chance of drawing them first up if they qualify. Even if Sydney lose their first up match they get a second chance to fight for fifth spot. The South American teams which used to be equivalent to the top European teams now have fallen behind with the player drain getting bigger each year. Asian teams are going stronger with the addition of more money.
So if Sydney qualify they have a good chance of at least making it to the semi finals. From there it will only take one big upset to make it to the finals and one more big upset to win the competitions.

i dont klnow how seriously the bigger clubs will take this tournament tho. Surely, they wont want to risk too much for the amount of money that is on offer. It's a lot to sydney fc, but its about a transfer fee of half a decent player in europe

I reckon it'll depend more on whether they're in CL / league contention.

i dont think u will c the best liverpool squad playing... although they should still send a couple of star players over just to get them victory! imagine if sydney fc win though, liverpool may be the euro champs but we will be the world champs

Final Sydney v Liverpool
We are losing 3 nil at half time. Zdrilla drills 3 home in 7 minutes after the break and sends it to extra time. No goals in extra time. Penalties. Bolton acts like a rabid monkey on the goal line and puts off Harry Kewell and Gerrard. Sydney FC World Champs. ! ;D

Enjoyed following South through their games against some of the world's best, it was a pity Gong didn't get the chance to have a go...even though they were our greatest rivals at the time. I expect Sydney FC to make a better go of it than those two teams though...they will have players who have played at a higher level and let the others know not to get intimidated... ...shame it's not Perth, but it doesn't look like we'll be the team we once were...it may end up better for the league with Sydney there...
