Yet another testament to Sydney football fans (and generally). Last time, almost 20,000 people came to watch Australian play the Solomons.
Imagine how many people would come to watch the equivalent in other sports (ie. 2nd string local team v overseas minnows) with the same level of publicity that that game had (ie. none):
- Cricket: Aus v Zimbabwe didn't crack 10,000 on any day when they last played in Australia - Rugby League: under strength Kangaroos v Lebanon (although might as well be Mongolia) - not sure that this has been played before, but hard to imagine a huge crowd showing up. - Union: Australia A v USA - ditto - AFL: Western Bulldogs v some VFA team (since they don't play international) - hard to see this cracking a couple of hundred people in Sydney.
I've long said that this idea of Melbourne being the sporting capital of Australia is rubbish. This proves it (I'm thinking another thread is coming on).
