I've done a couple of Conitki tours and have backpacked, and backpacking was a lot more fun. Here a list of pro and cons for each type of travel; Backpacking[/u] Pros- You can go where you like and you have no schedule
- If you hate a place, you just jump onto a train/bus and leave town.
- If some people at a Youth Hostel are giving you the shits, you're not stuck with them for another 20 day
- You meet a lot of different people
- If you like a place you can stay longer
- More relaxed, you set the pace
Cons- It's a lot more work, there's no tour guide so you have to make your own itinerary/transport arrangements
- Some Hostels aren't the best places to stay
- Your costs aren't as fixed as being on a tour
Contiki[/u] Pros- No planning, you just show up and they take you to the next town city
- No hunting for bars, the tour guides direct you to good places
- The camaraderie of the group
- The guided city and landmark tours
- Travel cost are pretty fixed, except for food and drink
- Some of the extra night activities are great
- The roadside diners in Italy
Cons- If you're stuck with a bunch of dickheads, you're stuck with them for the next 20 days
- No control over the schedule
- If you like a place, you have to leave when everybody else does
- If you get lucky and shag someone on the tour, you are stuck with them for the rest of the trip (especially bad if the woman turns out to be a possessive psycho)
- The 6am starts
- The 12 hour bus trips
- The endless souvenir shops the tour ends up at
- It's tiring, after I did a 32 day tour and I was knackered and sleep for a day, just to recover
Not to say I didn't love the Contiki tour, and it was a great taste test for Europe for the backpacking trip I did a few years later. BTW, it's as total myth that a Contiki tour is a good source of sex.

No, although it was a blessing in disguise, considering the experience my room mate had - he was the one that ended up with the psycho.
Even though it's usually 6 women to every bloke, if the women weren't in a relationship and wouldn't cheat, the other women you wouldn't touch with someone elses ©ock.
Also it was unique to my group, you'd bumped into other groups and their experiences were the same.

I've done some more research:
You have two options: Timeout vs Concept
The timeout is you get hotels all the way, the concept is you bring a sleeping bag and sleep in cabins.
As i'm thinking for a getaway holiday, i'm looking for a timeout. Haven't decided what trip but i'm going to miss the kick off of the A-League. MUTH FCKA

Robbie, I did two Timeout tours back in '96, one was a 32 day European Trip the other a 11 day tour of Spain and Portugal. I know it was a while back, but it probably hasn't changed that much. Just send me a message and I'll answer any questions.

I've been on one, but went with my g/f of the time. Our group was a bit lame. The only one to really get any regular sex (other than me) was the bus driver, who shagged this Danish chick that was actually over 35 and shouldn't have been allowed on the trip anyway My wife went on one when she was 18 and lost her virginity to some Kiwi in Paris. I lost my virginity in my back patio in Maddington, the Macquarie Fields of Perth. People prefer her story.

I did a Contiki tour through Europe, it was sensational, although the Yanks have a tendency to be slightly retarded at following basic instructions, like "Dont forget your passport" or "Italian people speak Italian, not English. They might not understand you".
And what about those Italian roadside diners? Some of the staff there could pick up their act a little. I only wanted 'uno cappacino, uno salami capri, por favora', without a hint of obnoxious tourist-ism, and it was like pulling teeth. Stupid mole.
But otherwise, everything else was tops. Rome is a bit of a dive. sooty, blazingly hot and chaotic and full of bastard pickpockets. France and Switzerland were the best countries, neat clean, sophisticated, the weather was milder and far less threatening to the average wide-eyed Australian traveller.
And dont be fooled by the myth. The French are a wonderful bunch, although dont bring up the rugby, they can talk about it all bloody day. Tres Bien!
