i really dont understand how all you guys keep saying that dukes is a quality player. sure he hasnt done to bad in the epl and he did well in scotland (which any half decent striker would) but for a bloke who is supposed to be the best striker this country has to offer im sorry but hes not worth the paper the team sheet is written on. i really dont know why he is in the squad. his first goal for australia was against ireland (2003?) which was something like his 20th start. im not sure what his tally is now but it aint much. im sorry but it aint good enough!! and before you say "oh but he does alot off the ball" and "he puts alot of balls through to other players" his job first and foremost is to SCORE goals not set them up. aby other country would have gotten rid off him a long time ago. and its bloody well time we did so to!!!!

You are wrong about his first job is to score goals - that is only the case if the Manager says so. Just because he is a forward doesn't mean he is there to only score goals.
But I agree, he is totally overrated at International level. I worry when Farina talks like all our worries will be over when Viduka is back in the side..

I never have viewed him as a striker, like Kaiser said, he's more of a forward. His hold up play is unbelievable and that only should get him in the starting XI. But the real problem is when he is viewed as a striker, as he is currently being touted as for the Confederations Cup. Duke's is not going to score 1 goal in the tournament and the real problem is the Yellowroos don't have a capable frontman to get the ball into the net. Zdrilic isn't renowned for banging them in (okay he got 9 in the oceania qualifiers but that's not exactly a challenge), Thompson doesn't match the hype and Sterjovski is a fkn midfielder. If Duke's wasn't in the starting XI, who would you pick?

I'd have to agree that 1. Dukes is overated at the national level, and 2. picking him after not kicking a ball for 6 months is a friggin joke.
it's one thing to say he is not picked to just score goals, but the fact remains he can't score goals and he often is the only one chosen for up front. Guys like shearer for example, can score out of nothing, and when it counts. Who seriously believes viduka can do this?
And why wasn't scott Macdonald picked? I mean isn't two last minute gaspers against celtic enough???!!!

Overrated?! He is the best payer we have ever produced (or at very least , on par with Zelic, Okon and Kewell). He has a football brain which is second to none in the world, coupled with the skill to pull it of. First man picked every time, even if he hasn't played for 3 years.
People complain we didn't look like opening up NZ, yet then don't want a player whose great talent is precisely that.
It boggles the mind.

The fact remains....he is a striker that CANNOT score goals at the international level.
How many other coaches from other countries would pick a striker with such a bad record and hasn't kicked a ball in 6 months? It doesn't have to be pretty, we just need a striker that can score. He's not it.
The best player we've ever produced? Well we are obviously watching different teams.

He is a great club player, don't get me wrong. But has done nothing at the senior international level.
The other thing is in Farina's "I don't know what to do with all our midfielders" 4-3-3 system Viduka becomes the scoring striker which I do not think he is up to (at least in time for the World Cup qualifiers).
I thought McDonald was injured - I HOPE McDonald is injured and that is the reason he was not selected... otherwise...

For some reason I've always wanted to see Dukes and Milicic start for Australia. I reckon given time they'd be a great partnership. Both are strong target man and intellegent players given the chance to work with each other I reckon they'd well.
